Buddy's Pizza was founded in Detroit in 1946 by Gus Guerra at Buddy's Rendezvous Pizzeria, where he invented Detroit-style pizza — a square pie baked in repurposed automotive steel pans, layered with Wisconsin brick cheese and topped with a caramelized crust. Food Network named Buddy's one of the five best pizzerias in the United States, USA Today called it pilgrimage-worthy, and The Daily Meal ranked it sixth on its 101 Best Pizzas in America list. Buddy's established National Detroit-Style Pizza Day on June 23 to commemorate its 75th anniversary and its role as the originator of the style.
