Café du Monde is a New Orleans landmark and the city's oldest coffee stand, open since 1862 on Decatur Street across from Jackson Square in the French Quarter. It is world-famous for its pillowy, square beignets dusted with powdered sugar — served in orders of three — alongside chicory-blended café au lait, a tradition born during the Civil War when coffee imports were blockaded. The café operates 24 hours a day, 364 days a year, and the beignet was officially designated the state doughnut of Louisiana in 1986.
