Communion opened in 2020 in Seattle's Central District, founded by chef Kristi Brown and her son Damon Bomar inside the historic Liberty Bank Building — home of the first Black-owned bank in the Pacific Northwest. Chef Brown's menu celebrates what she calls 'Seattle Soul,' blending traditional American soul food with Pacific Northwest and pan-Asian influences in dishes like fried catfish po'mi and black-eyed-pea hummus. Just six months after opening, Condé Nast Traveler named Communion one of the 12 best new restaurants in the world, and Brown has earned a James Beard Award nomination for Best Chef Northwest and Pacific.
