Dairy Queen was founded on June 22, 1940, in Joliet, Illinois, by J.F. McCullough and his son Alex, who had developed a soft-serve ice cream formula in 1938. Now owned by Berkshire Hathaway and headquartered in Bloomington, Minnesota, the chain operates over 7,700 locations in 20 countries. Dairy Queen is renowned for its soft-serve cones, the Dilly Bar (introduced in 1954), and the Blizzard, which sold 175 million units in its debut year of 1985.
