Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room has been a Savannah, Georgia institution since 1943, when Sema Wilkes took over a historic boardinghouse at 107 W Jones St and began serving communal, family-style Southern cooking to boarders and the public alike. The restaurant won the James Beard America's Classics Award in 2000, and today continues under family management, seating guests in shifts of ten around tables loaded with fried chicken, cornbread dressing, black-eyed peas, and sweet potato soufflé.
