Sbarro was founded in 1956 by Neapolitan immigrants Gennaro and Carmela Sbarro, who opened a salumeria in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. Carmela's pizza slices for shift workers proved so popular that the family pivoted to pizza, opening their first mall location at Brooklyn's Kings Plaza in 1970 and expanding the brand nationally through the 1980s. Today Sbarro operates more than 600 locations across 28 countries, with the brand still bearing the tagline 'NYC.1956' honoring its Brooklyn origins.
