Sweet Lew's BBQ opened in 2018 when founder Lewis Donald converted a historic service station at 923 Belmont Avenue in Charlotte's Belmont neighborhood into a counter-service BBQ joint. Inspired by Lexington Barbecue's Piedmont-style pulled pork tradition, Donald and co-founder Laura Furman Grice built a 450-square-foot smokehouse burning hickory, pecan, and peach wood. Donald also co-founded the Carolina BBQ Festival and received The Ledger's 40 Over 40 Award in 2025.
