Vic's Ice Cream was founded in 1947 in Sacramento's Land Park neighborhood by U.S. Coast Guard veterans Ash Rutledge and Vic Zito, who met during World War II and capitalized on post-war sugar rations to open the shop at 3199 Riverside Boulevard. The parlor has retained its original black-and-white checkered floors, vintage atmosphere, and 29 classic flavors since opening, winning seven consecutive gold medals at the California State Fair beginning in 1953. Alongside traditional sundaes, shakes, and cones, Vic's serves American diner classics in a setting largely unchanged from the Truman era.
