World Famous Hotboys was founded in 2017 by Victor Ghaben and Wallace Berkley Gibbs in Oakland, California, beginning as a backyard pop-up before opening its first brick-and-mortar location in 2019. The restaurant describes its cuisine as Oakland hot chicken, a California-influenced take on Nashville hot chicken using 100 percent halal chicken brined overnight and fried to order. In 2021, Yelp ranked World Famous Hotboys the number-one fried chicken sandwich restaurant in California, and Forbes profiled the chain after it sold one million sandwiches.
