Le Diplomate opened in April 2013 when Philadelphia restaurateur Stephen Starr transformed a former laundromat at 14th and Q Streets NW into a meticulously designed Parisian brasserie, anchoring the 14th Street corridor's restaurant renaissance. The restaurant quickly became one of Washington DC's most coveted reservations, earning a spot in The Washington Post's DC Restaurant Hall of Fame and attracting high-profile guests including Michelle Obama before a French presidential state dinner. Owner Stephen Starr won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Restaurateur in 2017.
