Star of India was founded in 1990 by Avtar Singh, who emigrated from Punjab, India, making it one of the first Indian restaurants in Salt Lake City. The family-run establishment specializes in Northern Indian and Punjabi cuisine with an emphasis on tandoori cooking, and has been passed down to Singh's daughters Param and Rashmi. After a break-in forced a closure in 2024, the restaurant reopened in March 2025 at 1000 S. Main Street in Salt Lake City's Ballpark neighborhood.
